HONG KONG - The reality of China's takeover of Hong Kong on July 1 hit home yesterday with the arrival of the first contingent of People's Liberation Army troops in the British colony.
A convoy of eight cars, vans and trucks bearing Chinese and Hong Kong license plates and carrying 40 uniformed PLA officers and soldiers rolled across the border at the Lok Ma Chau crossing point at lunch time yesterday to be received in a low-key ceremony by a handful of British officials and locally based Chinese diplomats.
