April 15 reminds us that we exist to pay taxes. If you doubt that, try not paying them. You will find that no matter how many infants and children, feeble, aged, handicapped, ill, or dying relatives are dependent upon your livelihood, you are off to prison. The government's claim on your income comes first. With what you have left, you can attend to your other responsibilities.
The primacy of the government's claim - enforced by prison no matter how law-abiding in other respects - places "free" Americans in the same position as medieval serfs. We do not own the product of our own labor. As the Tax Foundation points out each year, the average American works ...
