Virginia's Historic Garden Week, which has been described unblushingly as America's Largest Open House, lives up to its name in more ways than one.
It's the oldest (64 this year) and largest event of its kind in the country, offering visitors a close-up study of two centuries of American gardens, architecture and interior design. It's also a rare opportunity to peek inside some of the state's most attractive homes and properties, such as the handsome, private James River plantations that are a window on the daily world of prominent Virginia families of the 18th and 19th centuries.
