With its new S70, Volvo gets a jump on next year with a new model and a new name.
The S70 is one of a new family of Volvos for 1998, all of which carry unfamiliar nomenclature. In the Swedish manufacturer's new system, S stands for sedan, V for station wagon (the V means versatility) and C for coupe and convertible.
Numbers following the letters indicate the series. The S70 replaces this year's 850 sedan, which has front-wheel drive, while the new S90 replaces the rear-drive 960 series.
