President Clinton, speaking on education to the NAACP, yesterday suggested that the guardians of poor inner-city and rural children hold them to high standards instead of feeling sorry for them.
Mr. Clinton told 3,000 members of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People assembled in Pittsburgh for the annual convention: "Often when we see people in difficult circumstances we feel compassion for them, and we should. But when this compassion leads to expecting less of their children, that is a mistake, for it sells their future down the drain."
