Arlington's new school superintendent warmed a crowd of staffers and parents yesterday, vowing to evaluate the performance of school principals and begin helping minority students get better grades and higher test scores.
Robert G. Smith, 53, gave a broad outline of his ideas and leadership style before about 50 parents and school officials in his first public appearance since the School Board named him to the $125,000 post last week. His four-year contract begins July 1.
Mr. Smith promised to meet with parents, administrators and teachers to determine a plan to guide the school system.
