TAIPEI, Taiwan - Voters answered China's military threats with a thunderous rebuke yesterday, handing incumbent President Lee Teng-hui a clear mandate in an escalating standoff with Beijing.
After weeks of armed intimidation that drew the world spotlight to the tiny island, Mr. Lee won 54 percent of the vote, more than twice that of his nearest rival.
"International attention," Mr. Lee said in his victory speech, "has encouraged us to forever safeguard our democratic path, especially under military threats and harassment."
