"The Tibbs Collection is the finest and biggest private African American art collection in Washington, D.C.," said the University of Maryland's distinguished art professor, David C. Driskell, who also is curator of the Camille O. and William H. Cosby Jr. Collection of African American Art.
"[The Tibbs Collection is] rivaled only by the Howard University Collection and that of the National Museum of American Art . . . The Tibbs Collection also ranks fourth or fifth nationally," said Mr. Driskell.
His comments came yesterday, when Corcoran Gallery of Art Director David C. Levy announced a gift of 30 works from Thurlow Evans Tibbs Jr.
