Upon closer inspection, it appears that William Safire pulled his punch Tuesday when he called the First Lady "a congenital liar." Mr. Safire, though he used the dread L-word, at least posited that HRC had good reason to lie when she did. The picture that emerges from his column is that of a crafty guerrilla in the P.R. wars who lies without remorse - but only when the untruths are dictated by necessity. But maybe this picture is overly generous - rather like the soft-focused camera in an Elizabeth Taylor perfume commercial.
