The bishops of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church yesterday exhorted its General Conference to vote for godly politicians, oppose cuts in welfare and affirmative action, and condemn homosexual practice.
"Vote for the candidates who demonstrate the Christian principles of love, integrity, compassion and who place the needs of the people above the greed of politics," said a message read by Bishop Milton A. Williams of Baltimore.
The 30-page document, which reflects the 1.2-million-member black church's economic liberalism and moral conservatism, will be its guide until 2000, the bishops told the 570 voting delegates and hundreds of visitors.
