CONCORD, N.H. - The father of the first-in-the-nation presidential primary was buried Monday as state officials issued assurances that the primary won't follow him to the grave.

Concord lawyer Richard F. Upton, the former state House speaker who sparked the idea of a primary to get more voter participation in choosing a president, died of natural causes last week at a Portsmouth hospital. He was 81.
