There's been much talk about how President Clinton has adopted so many conservative positions as to make him a moderate Republican. But imitation has been coming back in the other direction as well. As anyone who watched the Republican Convention in San Diego can testify, Republicans have stolen many a principle away from the Democrats, including most obviously "inclusiveness" and "compassion."
We had a hearing-impaired Miss America, a woman with AIDS, a rape victim, a paralyzed policeman, a paraplegic skier, and many more. Because compassion these days is big, big, big. A political party wouldn't stand a chance if it had no feeling for those among us ...
