It's not far off to compare the lined, jowly face of James Whitmore to Mount Rushmore. He has played rock-solid Americans such as Will Rogers, Teddy Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman and, at Ford's Theatre until March 10, the crusty Oliver Wendell Holmes.
Mr. Whitmore might not dig the big-cliff comparison, though. After all, he bounds about the stage in "The Magnificent Yankee," hardly suggesting a stationary crag in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The 74-year-old actor's Justice Holmes is bombastic, quivering from the tips of his long handlebar mustache all the way down to his bouncing, stamping feet.
