With all the hubbub surrounding "alternative" fuels, it's no wonder most people aren't aware of the phenomenal progress that has been made in cleaning up gasoline-burning engines. Few know, for instance, that a 1996 model-year car runs almost emissions free (95-98 percent "clean" or better) - and that forthcoming breakthroughs will raise the bar even higher.
Most of these improvements have come about as the result of improving the efficiency of the combustion process. The less unburned gas you have, the lower overall emissions will be. And by getting every bit of latent energy out of a drop of raw gasoline, you also achieve higher fuel economy.
