Angola, having tumbled directly from four centuries of colonialism into a 20-year Cold War-fueled internal conflict, has reached a decisive moment in its struggle to become a modern nation.
For four days next week, Jonas Savimbi's UNITA, the guerrilla movement long at war with a formerly Marxist government, will meet in a party congress at which it is expected to transform itself from a military movement into a civilian political party.
In the process, it is expected to tackle most of the issues barring the way to a full peace.
