Since leaving town with the Legg Mason Tennis Classic trophy, Michael Chang has gone on a tear toward the top of the ATP Tour rankings. It seems hard to believe, but Chang is closing in on No. 2 Thomas Muster, and he's within striking distance of No. 1 Pete Sampras.
Wait a second. Has Chang played his way to the top, or has the sometimes crazy, always controversial rankings system put him there?
Chang's had a pretty good year, but he hasn't reached the finals of a Grand Slam event. His jump in the rankings comes from winning titles in Washington and Los Angeles and reaching the finals in Cincinnati, where he lost to Andre Agassi.
