In his June 19 column, "A test of Clinton's role as commander" Oliver North lauded the "courage" and "conscience" displayed by Army Spec. Michael New who is refusing to "don" his American military costume and serve under a Finnish general in the United Nation's peacekeeping project in Macedonia.
Mr. North fails to consider the significant extent to which Eastern European, United States and United Nations interests coincide. The preservation of health, peace and security for the people of Macedonia in no way challenges or threatens the vision, sanctity or political interests of the United States and in fact contributes measurably to it.
