Douglas McGrath's movie version of Jane Austen's "Emma" proves the happiest of latecomers. A disarming, irresistible addition to the recent parade of Austen adaptations, it enhances the civilized pleasure that began to accumulate about a year ago with the release of Amy Heckerling's "Clueless," a witty update of "Emma" transposed to the teen-age culture of contemporary Beverly Hills.
