Some serendipitous moments one could do without, but there it is: Word in of Adm. Jeremy Boorda's having shot himself came just as I was reading the last pages of Edwin S. Shneidman's new book, "The Suicidal Mind."
"Can anybody commit suicide?" Mr. Shneidman asks in his discussion of commonalities found among those taking their own lives. "Not likely," he concludes. But, and he is thinking here of the Kareninas, Bovarys, Pontelliers, young Werthers and others with which literature is replete, "if you are an Anna or an Emma or an Edna, then you must be very careful how you turn life's pages and into what corners you paint yourself."
