Confederate naval commander Hunter Davidson is relatively unknown and rarely credited for his wartime deeds. But as commander of the Navy's Submarine Battery Service for the greater part of the Civil War, he was instrumental in denying Union naval support on the James River to federal forces attempting to capture Richmond.
In other roles, Davidson was one of the lieutenants on the CSS Virginia (the Merrimac) in the titanic clash with the USS Monitor in Hampton Roads; he captained a precursor of today's torpedo boats in a daring attack on the USS Minnesota, and he commanded the blockade runner City of Richmond in support of the Confederate ram Stonewall.
