Your Oct. 30 "Culture, et cetera" section cited, under the title "Dysfunctional family," an article in Mother Jones magazine claiming that the National Rifle Association has "attacked" or "targeted" Rep. Linda Smith, Washington Republican, due to her stance on campaign finance reform. The only thing dysfunctional here is Mother Jones' standard of journalism.
While we have differed with Ms. Smith on the campaign finance issue, we have given her an "A" rating and have endorsed her re-election campaign in our members' magazines sent to her congressional district. We are also phoning our members to urge their support of Rep. Ms. Smith on Election Day.
