This August, Oldsmobile turns 100, making it the first American car company to reach the century mark. It was back in August 1897 that Ransom Eli Olds and a group of investors formed the Olds Motor Vehicle Company in Lansing, Mich. In 1899, the company was reorganized into the Olds Motor Works and moved to Detroit, where Mr. Olds built a three-story factory on the shores of the Detroit River.
While Henry Ford gets most of the credit for the modern auto assembly line, it was Mr. Olds who first designed the concept in the United States. The famous Curved Dash Olds was the first car built on a progressive assembly system that became the model for the auto ...
