CHARLES CITY COUNTY, Va. - The American presidency is indelibly stamped on the houses on the banks of the James River between Richmond and Williamsburg. Two presidents were born in the Charles City area, many visited, and one was wed in that region.
* William Henry Harrison, the ninth president, was born at Berkeley Plantation on Feb. 9, 1773, and spent part of his childhood there. The three-story brick home dates to 1613 and is also the ancestral home of the 23rd president, Benjamin Harrison, William's grandson.
* John Tyler, the 10th president, lived at nearby Sherwood Forest from 1842 until his death in 1862. At 301 feet, Sherwood Forest is the ...
