Shortly after her father died, Jila Eslami Costello received a rude shock - a stranger had been buried beside him in the family's cemetery plot.
"It's like a betrayal of trust - you trust the cemetery. . . . That's something sacred to me and my family," Mrs. Costello said, her voice choked with tears.
In the two years since she discovered the stranger, Mrs. Costello and her family have been unable to persuade officials at George Washington Cemetery in Adelphi to move the body. Managers claimed that her mother had given permission to bury the other person in the plot, even though her mother emphatically denies it.
