The White House conceded for the first time last night that it accepted a 1995 contribution to the Democratic Party in the mansion, violating administration rules barring aides from receiving donations.
An administration official said Margaret A. Williams, Hillary Rodham Clinton's chief of staff, took the $50,000 check on March 9, 1995, from Democratic fund-raiser Johnny Chung while in the White House. It was made out to the Democratic National Committee and cashed a week later.
