Two factors have contributed to a renewed interest in cross country skiing: new gear that makes the sport easier and aging baby boomers who are looking for a family-oriented outdoor winter activity.
Surveys by SIA, the snow sports industry trade association, and Cross Country Skier Magazine indicate that the average cross country skier is a 40-ish, highly educated, professional person with expendable income. Unlike other snow sports, more women (52 percent) than men cross country ski, according to SIA.
