Christopher Plummer almost manages to deliver the whole John Barrymore story as soon as he makes his entrance in William Luce's "Barrymore," a biographical drama scheduled to open next month on Broadway.
The stage at Baltimore's Mechanic Theatre - the show's next-to-last tryout stop - has been dressed as an odd-angled replica of New York's Plymouth Theatre, circa 1942. Barrymore, only a month away from his death at age 60, has rented the place to brush up his Shakespeare, specifically his Richard III, in hope of reviving his career.
But instead of Shakespeare, Barrymore immediately treats us to a drunken song and a dirty limerick. Mr. Plummer ...
