President Clinton has made a gesture of reconciliation to Iran, only days after the House unanimously passed legislation to tighten the economic screws on the Islamic republic.
In an interview in an Arabic-language weekly published Saturday in London, Mr. Clinton said the United States was "prepared at any time to have a full and frank dialogue" with the Tehran regime.
"Our only condition is that such a dialogue must be with an authoritative, official representative of the Iranian government," he told the Saudi-owned Al Sharq Al Awsat newspaper.
