Libya has halted construction on a chemical weapons plant that the United States threatened to bomb, according to Pentagon and intelligence officials.
"Yes it's stopped, but we're not sure why," said a senior Pentagon official familiar with intelligence reports on the facility 37 miles south of Tripoli.
Activity outside the facility appears to have ceased. But it is not clear what work may be going on inside the three tunnels built into desert mountains where most of the plant is being constructed.
"We'd see things going in and out," the official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
