Taking a cue from the competition, the New Republic is filling its top vacancy this fall by catching a star from a rival magazine.
Michael Kelly, a second-generation journalist and Washington native who currently writes about politics for the New Yorker - a virtual encampment of
ex-Repub-
lic editors and scribes - will become the New Republic's editor and chief columnist after the November elections.
In an interview yesterday, Mr. Kelly, 39, called his next assignment "a good fit."
The magazine "has a long tradition of anti-orthodoxy, of nondoctrinal honesty," he said.
