Great exhibitions bounce off one other. National Gallery of Art Director Earl A. Powell III traveled to the "Johannes Vermeer" exhibit at the Hague's Mauritshuis in March. There he heard of a special old master show from Rome's Palazzo Doria Pamphilj at London's National Gallery.
"I was knocked out by it when I saw it in London on my way home," Mr. Powell says. "It's from one of the greatest private collections in Italy and also one of the best in the world."
"The rest is history," he jokes.
