Several top Maryland Democrats sought to distance themselves from a closed-door meeting to discuss possible challengers to Gov. Parris Glendening, but organizers insisted the meeting would go on as planned tomorrow.
They were careful to say that it is not solely a "dump Glendening" meeting, however, after the governor attacked organizers as "gubernatorial wanna-bes" and a "few powerful people in a smoke-filled back room."
One-time gubernatorial candidate Stewart Bainum Jr., who will host the gathering in his Chevy Chase home, said the meeting between top Democrats and businessmen will touch on many issues related to the 1998 election. He did not ...
