Samuel Taylor Coleridge's opium-inspired, apocalyptic "Kubla Khan" vividly imaged the visionary 13th-century ruler as powerful, but about to meet his downfall. Kublai conquered China and founded its Yuan dynasty. But even before him, his grandfather Chinggis (Ghengis) Khan had ruthlessly conquered north China and large parts of Central Asia. It was the beginning of the Mongol hordes' construction of the largest land empire in history.
