The most exciting thing that happened in the garden this week is the discovery that our hellebore is colonizing. The snow and ice this winter mashed and broke some of the stems, but it put up a new set of leaves and bloomed, and now for the first time since I planted it maybe four years ago, a little group of seedlings has fanned out under the parent plant.
I potted half of them in a humusy soil mixture, hoping to spread the colony to other shady parts of the garden, and left half where they are, hoping they'll grow up and colonize some more.
A colony of hellebores is very welcome - and not all that common since it's taken our plant all this time to ...
