It's enjoyable to see the Henson puppet theater back at play in "Muppet Treasure Island," its first feature since "The Muppet Christmas Carol" in 1992. A few innovations have appeared in the interim, and it remains to be seen what kind of a creative challenge they pose for the Henson apparatus.
Last year alone brought a couple of phenomenal breakthroughs in comic fantasy, "Babe" and "Toy Story." The former, now a major Academy Award contender, may prove one of the happiest flukes in movie history, but even if inimitable, it demonstrates a fresh blend of live-action and puppet footage.
That blend could be troublesome for the Muppets, who had a playful ...
