For 21 years, "Bonsai Bob" Drechsler has lovingly turned trees into works of art. Mr. Drechsler, curator of the National Bonsai and Penjing Museum at the National Arboretum, is retiring Aug. 2. He has been the keeper of 127 bonsai trees on display and about 500 teaching and "reserve" trees.
According to the National Bonsai Foundation, the "artistically trained trees" are called "bonsai" in Japan ("bon" means tray and "sai" means grow - something grown in a shallow pot). They are called "penjing" in China, where they are known as "artistic pot plants."
