The poet takes the students by surprise.
He is late and flustered, he claims later, but none of that shows. Instead, what sticks with the Suitland High School students who have given Roland Flint their lunch hour, is the quiet way the burly, brown-bearded poet has of making the words almost good enough to eat.
He reads Patrick Cavanaugh's poem about searching for his dead father in the eyes of every old man that passes.
"My father died in October at the age of 91," Mr. Flint explains before giving an emotionally charged recitation. By the time he finishes, there are small gasps of understanding from the students.
