Among the scores of war memorials in Texas, the Civil War monument in the town of Comfort is unique. It is the only such tribute to Union dead in Texas.
Northwest of San Antonio, Comfort and surrounding areas of the Texas Hill Country were settled by German immigrants in the 1840s and '50s. They quickly established prosperous towns and farms on the rocky frontier lands they acquired. The passions that were engulfing the United States in the late 1850s flared in Texas, too. Secession seemed inevitable after Abraham Lincoln's election in 1860, but many Texans resisted the idea.
