COLUMBIA, S.C. - An uncanny loyalty that transcends age, race and political party stands ready to return 93-year-old Republican Sen. Strom Thurmond to Washington.
"Southern people are very set in their ways," said Chris Manis, owner of Elite Epicurean, a political hangout here where grits come with eggs unless customers request otherwise. "We like the same breakfast, our eggs done the same way. If today is exactly the same as yesterday, that's good."
First elected to the Senate in 1954, Mr. Thurmond will turn 94 on Dec. 4.
