The roadmap could become an endangered species as auto makers increasingly introduce navigation and communications systems that get you where you want to go. Some even make reservations for your arrival.

In general, the navigation systems rely on Global Positioning System GPS satellites, which pinpoint a vehicle's location to within 100 yards. Some systems use GPS in combination with dead reckoning, which is a system that uses sensors to monitor the vehicle's turns and correlates that information with the GPS data. Some of the systems include a video screen inside the car that provides directions, which are often supplemented by audio directions.
