About a half-century ago, a nation that survived the collapse of a corrupt and criminal regime was blessed with a new leader in a 73-year-old survivor of the defeated regime's political prisons.

This man was to preside over the restoration of his country to a respectable place among the civilized nations of the Earth. He served as its chief statesman for 14 years, stepping down in 1963 at the age of 87. He lived four more years after that.
