Marcello Mastroianni, who died in Paris last week at age 72, became indelibly identified with the personal mythology of one great Italian filmmaker, the late Federico Fellini. Judicious admirers owe it to both men to soft pedal this collaboration in retrospect.
Many of the most appealing and skillful Mastroianni performances, especially as a farceur, were realized by other directors: for example, Mario Monicelli in "Big Deal on Madonna Street," Pietro Germi in "Divorce Italian Style," Ettore Scola in "The Pizza Triangle."
