When I was at school in France I was puzzled. Here my own country, America, was locked in a death struggle with the Soviet Union. All the major countries in western Europe were our allies, of course, although most were impeded by an internal Communist Party. Italian communists and allies reached 40 percent of the popular vote. French communists scored about 25 percent. When American tanks began landing in Atlantic ports on their way to strengthen NATO forces in Germany, French communist unions staged terrible riots, and Paris organized a whole new corps of anti-communist security troops, the famous Compagnies Republicaines de Securite.
