Article: White House files brief opposing assisted suicide.(A)

The Clinton administration took a formal stand against assisted suicide yesterday and told the Supreme Court a federal appeals court was wrong in equating the right to die with the right to choose abortion.

Papers filed by Acting Solicitor General Walter Dellinger said two appeals court rulings barring states from enforcing laws against assisted suicide create unjustified risk, including the danger medical or societal failures could trigger suicide in those "not truly ready to die."

At the same time the American Medical Association, the American Nurses Association and 30 other health care organizations also defended states' rights to outlaw assisted ...
