HARTFORD, Conn. - A surprisingly aggressive Bob Dole attacked President Clinton last night, repeatedly accusing the president during the premiere presidential debate of being a "liberal" who pretends otherwise. The Republican presidential nominee's attacks, mixed with barbs and quips, seemed to knock Mr. Clinton off stride in the first half of the 90-minute debate.
The president, following aides' advice, did not respond with overt attacks of his own and seemed more comfortable as the heated exchanges wore on.
