I was amazed at the blatant misrepresentation of the current situation in Angola in Frank Gaffney's Oct. 29 commentary, "Angola . . . where peace has a chance." Its observations bear little resemblance to the real situation in Angola. Indeed, the author's prediction of violence if the international community continues to press UNITA to uphold its commitments belies the very title.
Regarding UNITA's so-called compliance with the peace process, the piece ignores hard facts documented by the U.N. Verification Mission and others on the ground in Angola. UNITA has registered 63,000 "soldiers," yet many were old, infirm, underage or conscripts; some 12,000 have ...
