Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott will preside next year over a much more aggressively conservative group of Republican senators who will focus on tax and spending cuts, GOP lawmakers said yesterday.
Senators and Senate officials close to Mr. Lott describe him as more philosophically conservative than his predecessor, Bob Dole, and say he and the new GOP senators will be much more committed to a conservative agenda.
"I would say that this new group of incoming Republicans is going to reflect a more conservative Senate than the one in the last Congress," said Sen. Rod Grams, Minnesota Republican.
