LHASA, China - Bhutan is a tiny Himalayan country where the king's four wives are sisters. Now it has another first: The monarchy has lifted it's nationwide no-TV zone, and Thimphu, the capital, at least has embraced the boob tube.
The Bhutan Broadcasting Service (BBS) began beaming television last month as part of King Jigme Singye Wangchuck's coronation silver jubilee. Only Thimpu is targeted for the initial programming, but eventually BBS hopes to expand throughout the mountainous country.
Bhutan covers 18,150 square miles - half again bigger than Maryland. The government-controlled TV broadcasts will be in Dzonghkha language or English, depending ...
