These days, when most people talk about Rottweilers and pit bulls, the words "maul," 'attack" or "vicious" generally follow.
Yet Rottweilers, at least, have a decidedly peaceful history.
Canine experts trace the dogs to ancient Rome, where they were used in herding cattle.
Later, the dogs followed their masters over the Alps into southern Germany and a town called Rottweil, where they were widely used to bring cattle to market.
Through the 1970s, the Rottweiler was a fairly uncommon dog in the United States, ranking in the middle of the American Kennel Club registered breeds in terms of number of dogs registered, according to the ...
