Latin America was very much on the minds of those who gathered here in New York in 1992 to initiate the project that became known as "Evangelicals and Catholics Together." Nowhere in the world is the confrontation between evangelical Protestants and Roman Catholics so intense, and typically hostile, as in the countries of Central and South America, including the Caribbean. As discussed in my book Appointment in Rome, the ECT vision was vigorously proposed at the 1997 Synod for America convened by Pope John Paul II.
